10 Things To Know And Are Getting Psyched Up For, For Windows 10

Microsoft has everyone speculating and debating over whether Windows 10 is going to be a decent OS. Many of you who reads this will know, it's Windows soon to be hot off the press Operating System, not only will Microsoft's new OS replace Windows 8/8.1 and – hopes –Windows 7 it will replace most phone and tablet operating systems developed by them. It will be one operating system across all platforms.

Well that's the plan, I imagine OneDrive will play the most crucial part of this new all-in-one set-up. Microsoft's aim is to combine the split users back together. A lot of people embraced Windows 8/8.1 but most hated it with a passion. It didn't resemble anything that previous OS users were used to. So Windows 10 has been developed with both parties taken into consideration and hopes to join them all, on one brand spanking new OS.

If you sign up to the Windows Insider Program, you can download the latest preview build of Windows 10.
Please note that unless you are a tech wizard, it is advised that you install this on either; a different hard drive and duel boot alongside your current OS or create a virtual machine using software like Virtual Box or Vmware.

So 10 things that you may or may not know about Windows 10:

Windows 10 is set for a summer release this year(2015)

Microsoft gave us our first look at what they were developing back in October 2014 and the released what the called was there Business-orientated preview, although at this early stage there wasn't much to do in the preview build it did have inclinations of what was to come. Following this build in January there consumer-orientated preview was dropped onto there site. This build had been drastically improved, some features were unlocked to get a sneak preview of what it may look like finished and some were even redesigned. A Pre-release build or even a Full Release is expected to be dropped sometime towards the end of April/start of May.

Office Apps to be included with Windows 10

These Office apps are Microsoft's way of trying to regain some of there lost territory, territory lost to free programs similar to office, like WPS, Google Drive apps etc. The Office apps will be optimized for phones, tablets and touchscreen PC's, they can also be used on a standard desktop which you can try out on the technical preview of the latest build.
How these will compare to Office 365 users and the upcoming Office 2016 desktop software remains a mystery.

Windows 10 will be free

Yes, Windows 10 will be free, but it comes with a couple of very well worded catches, the first being, it will only be free as an upgrade from Windows8/8.1 or Windows 7 only (loyal XP users get shafted here) and it has a time limit of a year to get this done, if you miss your window, which given the time frame should be very difficult, you will have to pay for it. There's also lots of speculation as to how it will be paid for after the year is up, will it be like all previous versions of windows and you only pay the one off fee or will there be a subscription based model set in place like they have done with Office 365? Who knows. The second is that you will get updates and support for the life of the device Windows 10 is installed on. So basically if your machine knackers, your back to paying for a new copy of Windows 10. What isn't known at the moment is whether you have to pay an upgrade fee after the year or there is a subscription charge. You can keep up to date with current Windows 10 information by signing up to there Windows 10 web page.

Holograms in the home, the future is coming faster than we thought

That's right, movies like Iron Man and Minority reports dreamt about waving your hands in the air to move windows and images in front of you.

Now Microsoft are giving it ago. Microsoft unveiled there new Holographic technology, its a set of technologies that will enable 3D imaging and hologram projection for apps developed for Windows 10. Also available for developers is Microsoft's HoloStudio software. To begin with it will be used minimally but hopefully when developers start using them and creating apps we will get a wide range of 3rd party apps to have fun with.

Windows can be tested and used right now

As I mentioned earlier Microsoft has been releasing preview builds of there soon to be flag ship OS. This gives us - as the end user - the opportunity to test, bug hunt and even comment on what we like and dislike about the OS and see if our collective voices are heard.
The preview builds are not finished products and are for beta testing only so not every feature of Windows 10 will be fully functional or stable at all, but most of it should work fine.

Insert Halo reference #1: Cortana

Halo was famous for its great story line, big worlds, fun to fight enemies and of course Master chief himself. But in the midst of all that beautifully crafted madness was the Artificial Intelligence Cortana. Microsoft have revived her and has developed there very own Digital Assistant, that first appeared on Windows 8.1 phones and will be a part of Windows 10. It's now available in the technical preview builds and has been since January. It ties in with Microsoft's search engine Bing, so you can just ask Cortana to look up something for you, or type it depending on your preference.
Cortana is far from working perfectly but I am confident that with the progress Microsoft is making on Windows 10, that Cortana will be working as we expect.

Windows RT maybe on the way out

Microsoft designed a version of Windows 8/8.1 that uses 32-bit ARM CPU technology for mobile devices, they also mentioned that they may be designing a newer version alongside Windows 10. Confusion ensued about this though when Microsoft's Surface 2 was discontinued and that existing RT devices will be kept alive only through upgrades and updates.

Gamers will be pleased

DirectX 12, this is Microsoft’s new API software for gaming. It promises faster gaming performance and better efficiency. Windows 10 will also include a DVR mode in which you can record the last 30 minutes of game play, so another push for social gaming.
Microsoft also announced that they will also enable cross platform gaming between Xbox and PC. This has been attempted by Microsoft before, so we will see if they can pull it off this time.

Insert Halo reference #2: Spartan

Microsoft has been developing a whole new web browser for us, aptly codenamed Project Spartan. But they are also keeping Internet Explorer 11 as well, so we get 2 browsers. Spartan will be a less cluttered browser that resembles more of what were used in other browsers like Google Chrome. Microsoft has developed this new browser in another attempt to regain territory they lost to popular browsers like Mozzila’s Firefox.

All for one and one for all

Is the theme with Windows 10, Microsoft is making the same Operating system available across all platforms. This means that most Windows phones should receive the upgrade, but there may be some unspecified exceptions. Microsoft tablets will also get Windows and Xbox One, this will as previously mentioned help with the cross platform gaming Microsoft intends to attempt again.

Microsoft's new Windows Version looks promising and boasts a lot of new features, it will give developers, businesses and home users a great platform to start a fresh new Windows experience and combine all there most used devices together.
