Disabling/Enabling Hibernation

If you turn your PC off quite often and your a bit space concious then this will help save hard drive space, it may not seem like much but those thousands of megabytes could be used so much more effectively like backing up images, or saving a few of your favourite songs or a couple of funny videos you made with your mates.

I'm going to show you how to disable the Hibernation feature, this will free up the said space.

This is pretty easy and can be done in a couple of ways on both Windows Vista and Windows 7 and most versions of Windows Server 2008.

Hibernation stores a copy of the systems memory on your hard disk when you use Hibernation. This is done so that what ever you were doing at the time gets saved and temporarily backed up, when you re-initialise your machine all that stored data is dumped back on to the system memory, this means you can pick up exactly where you left off.

Disabling Hibernation is fairly easily done using the Command Prompt, but can also be done by editing the registry.

Via the Registry:

Click the start menu and type Regedit in the search and then enter to open it.

Once open navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Power.

Once there right click 'HiberFileSizePercent' and modify then change the value to zero and click OK.

Do the same for 'HibernateEnabled' and set the value to zero and click OK.

Once that's done close the registry and restart your machine, when you next go to switch your machine off using the power menu from the start menu you'll notice the option for Hibernation has gone.

Via the Command Prompt:

Same as before click the start menu but this time type CMD, then right click it and Run As Administrator. This opens up the command prompt in the system folders instead of your user account.

To disable Hibernation you going to need to type in the command prompt 'powercfg.exe /hibernate off' that's that part done.

Enabling Hibernation

If you ever want to re-enable Hibernation then repeat these steps but instead just type 'powercfg.exe /hibernate on' and you will have Hibernation back.

If for some reason you don't have the option back in the Power menu, then you will need to disable Hybrid Sleep, to do this;

Go to the Start menu and click it, then click on Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options.

Once this window opens click on Change When Computer Sleeps in the left hand pane. Then click Change Advanced Power Settings.

This opens an new window with expandable menus, go to the one labelled Sleep and click it.

In the menu click on Allow Hybrid Sleep and turn it off.

Click Apply and close the window and Hibernation should be in the Power Menu again.

When you enable Hibernation you can set when the computer will hibernate in the same drop down menu where you disable Hybrid Sleep.

For those of you who don't use Hibernation then this is a good tip to reclaim some space on your Hard Drive that would otherwise be taken up by a feature not being used.
